Banned books video festival features teen freedom fighters

Teenage freedom fighters will strike a blow for freedom of expression and freedom to read during the ZB Library’s Banned Books Video Festival.

Open to any teens who will be high school students this fall, project participants form teams of up to four members and sign up to read books that have been banned or challenged in public or high school libraries. The selected titles, which will be given to participants at no charge by the library, all have a story of censorship behind them in which individuals or groups tried to keep others from reading them for a variety of reasons.

In exchange for the book, the contestants commit themselves to producing a video of more than 2 but less than 3 minutes describing the book’s plot, the background behind the censorship and advocate why the censorship was improper. Submissions can be made in a news documentary or entertainment format. The entries will be judged and the winner announced at the ZB Library Academy Banned Books Video Awards show during Banned Books Week on Thursday, Sept. 29.
